Anarchism and Hope

Anarchism and Hope is new writings from Aaron Lakoff who I had the pleasure of meeting at this years Toronto Anarchist Bookfair.  I'll be adding this tresure to the archive in the new year and it will hopefully be reviewed here soon! keep an eye out! Here is alittle about Aaron:

Aaron is the author of the zine “Anarchism and Hope”. He is a radio journalist, DJ and community organizer living in Montreal, trying to map the constellations between reggae, soul and a liberated world. His writings, radio reports, and other musings are on his blog at aaron.resist.ca

Dear Zine Club

Dear Zine Club,
I love you.....
If you didn't know it but a few folks in Guelph have started a zine club. Members have decided to  challenge each other by making a zine a month for a whole year, pictured above are a few of the zines that were made for the first month including the Zine Club passport made by zine club member Sirens of a Violent Storm Press. The Passport is super exciting because Guelph zine club has added some extra challenges to making a zine a month and inside the passport you can keep track of challenges you have met. Zine Club Guelph was inspired by Zine Club Hamilton who have just about finished their first year of zine making, will they continue to make zines for another year? I hope so!

Hamilton video-zine

When the punks in Hamilton do some thing, they do it big. Just announced this event will be celebrating the release of Hamilton's newest video-zine "Everywhere Else Makes me Sick" which documents Hamilton's Punk scene. Visit the blog to get all the details of who playing what show and where.
The zine will be in analogue format with a DIY screen printed cover, yes kittens dust off your VHS players for some punk rock fun.
If you like local punk scenes and DIY shows, Hamilton is the place to be this New Years. See you there!

Zine Reading!

Thanks to Ben and Silence (46 Essex st) we had a super rad event last night! byron opened the night by reading from his new released zine and ambient noise album called 'distance' than Stubbs Letter Press hit the orange chairs, Dad, Mark shared from his own creations explaining a bit about his and his daughters, Emily and Alice creative process. Emily and Alice followed reading individually from their rhyming zines. Silly, fun, and profound! Next members of the HZC gathered on the stage and told us about what they do how they do it and why. About five members read from their work and then answered questions. The Night was ended by the Zine Queen* herself, e.stan gifting a zine postcard book to each person in the whole crowd! wow!
Keep and eye on us, the zine library is planning other rad zine events!

Zine Reading!

Canzine!

OOOO.... I had the fun at canzine. I spent most of the time sitting at my own distro table (look mum!) and felt that I left the confines of the table I would end up spending money that I don't have. I did leave the table and I get some really cool stuff. I got the new Yard Sale! from the creator Harley you can see his stuff at his etsy store.  I found a zine all about dead pro-wrestlers, very cool! I ran into an comic drawing friend from Hamilton, Josh Rosen who donated some of his work to the library.  I got a few other this there, like way too many arty postcards and some other neat zines that I plan on reviewing here on this blog. yeah! oh and BP gave away little paper bags at the door filled with flyers, and stickers, and buttons. The one price of advertising material that most folks found strange and kinda dumb was a shoe horn..... OMG I have been wanting one for such a long time!

ACT Dinner!

The Arrow Archive was invited to table at the 9th annual Anti-Colonial Thanksgiving Dinner. So we will be there with info about the library and and a box of free zines for folks to dig through.
The Dinner is on Friday Oct 18th Guelph Youth Music Center 75 Cardigan St. at 5:30

If you don't know about the ACT dinner here is some info from their Face Book Page:
The ACT dinner brings together native and non-native people to share food, stories and deepen a political analysis of Canada’s ongoing legacy of genocide and exploitation of Indigenous people and the land. The dinner hopes to serve as a venue where attendees can continue to explore the life long process of decolonization on an individual basis, in the relationships we share and this land base known as Guelph.

Zine Fairs!

In my internet stumbling I discovered a pretty rad event that is gonna be happening in Toronto on October19th Toronto Queer Zine Fair! From reading on their web site they are trying to pull together a pretty rad, inclusive, accessible event. If you are in the area and wanna do more then just attend, they are looking for volunteers and if you identify as a queer zinester you could apply for a table. Check it out!

The following day October 20th is Canzine. Canzine is a huge, overwhelming, you'll spend way too much money, might, maybe find some cool shit, not so inclusive event. Check it out too but don't say I didn't warn you.

So no actual  audio zines I can order for the library, but folks can stream or download zine readings for listening pleasure!

New Sections!

While inputting some new zines into the library catalog I decided to make a few new sections. In the media box you will find, DIY released DVDs, audio zines, and spoken word recordings, there isn't much in there right now but we are hoping to fill that box up with good stuff soon. The next two new boxes come from the Lit zine section. I decided that of the four boxes labeled lit zines I could be a little more specific. So I picked out all the poetry zines and all the fiction and short story (story time) zines and gave them their own boxes. Enjoy!

Kazoo! Print Fest

Here are a few things that we picked up at the kazoo print fest, there where a few zinesters that sat among the print makers and a few print makers that had made zines, but wayyyy out of my price range. Just beautiful work though. Static Zine from Toronto was there, Stubbs Press was there in full force and even Keenan a returned from MTL with his Pro Can Comix!

The Arrow!

Finally The Arrow ( a resource zine from the archive) is Finnished! It made its first appearance at the OCAD Zine Fair in Toronto and it will soon find it's way around town... Keep yer eye out for it.
You can find a PDF version of The Arrow here.

OCAD Zine Fair

So I left work early to hop a bus  to the OCAD Zine Fair. I was worried that it wouldn't be worth the time, I was proved wrong. The Event was small with just under 20 tables and many of those tables held crafts and prints.  I set up in a dark hallway next to an other unfortunate couple of zinesters. The enthusiasm for the zine was defiantly in the air. Even as I set up the Two tables I signed up for ( look mum! and Arrow Archive) I had a interested party purchase a stack of photocopied zines from me and from then on folks ventured down our dimly lit hall way and got excited about what we had to distro. Not many folks knew we have a zine library here in Guelph and I helped get the wred out! We may soon have some visitors from Toronto.

Here is a little gem I picked up at the fair.... hand sceen printed.... ooohh la la

Zine Workshop

We had a Zine Workshop at the OPIRG zine library. People came, they ate snacks, learned about zines, and made mini zines.

Good Bye Zine World

From the moment I found out about Zine World, I was in love. I asked if they needed any help with reviews and in a few short weeks I was on the review team, that was about 3 years ago. Over those years, I contributed cover art and many many reviews. I found it was hard to work on such a huge collective project with folks who were spread all over the globe, but it happened.
A few months ago the publisher/ editor/ person who held it all together expressed that they didn't want to be the bottom liner any more. So after much debate,  ZW has folded. I'd like to thank everyone who helped with the project and everyone who read. Good Bye ZW.
